IDS/IPS
Cybersecurity is critical, and IDS/IPS systems provide comprehensive protection for your organization’s network.
Losing sensitive information because of a cyberattack is a nightmare every organization hopes it never has to deal with. Unfortunately, these types of attacks happen every day, and without the appropriate security measures in place, your organization could be the next victim. This is why intrusion detection and prevention systems, or IDS and IPS, have become a security best practice.
Information systems today are more capable and more widely used than ever before. Our entire society and thus, all businesses rely on computing environments that are attached to high speed internet connections. Performing essential job functions is so much easier online. However, this increased convenience and reliance on the internet coupled with the fact that cyber attacks are becoming more prevalent than ever has resulted in an increased need to have security measures in place to minimize risk as much as possible.
A comprehensive cybersecurity solution is critical for any business. In today’s world, that means having a network intrusion detection system and intrusion prevention system (IDS/IPS) in place. Implementing a robust IDS/IPS system is a critical way to ensure complete network security. These systems ensure any potential threats that sneak through your firewall are addressed as soon as the attack occurs. That’s why IDS/IPS are both vital in protecting your network. They work together to monitor traffic and report attacks. A good security strategy is to have them work together simultaneously. Although it’s best to have these systems work together as a team on their own, it’s important to understand what they do on their own before you deploy this solution.
The IDS monitors incoming and outbound network traffic for malicious activity or security policy violations. You can think of the IDS as the security alarm and the collector of information for your network. It monitors all traffic and also ensures you are notified of malicious activity. The IDS dumps information into the SIEM (security information and event management), and the SIEM communicates with other SIEM products in real time across the globe to keep your network secure. Your IDS contains a database of known attack signatures and compares inbound traffic against the database. The IDS can search potential attackers and see if they are a threat, but it cannot prevent hackers from sneaking into your network. That’s where the IPS comes in.
The intrusion prevention system (IPS) sits between your firewall and the rest of your network to stop suspected malicious traffic from getting to the rest of your network and becoming an active threat. Your IPS is the security guard of your system, preventing hackers from entering your network. The function of an IPS is to identify any suspicious activity, log information, attempt to block the activity, and then finally to report it. The IPS can execute a real-time response to stop an immediate threat to your network.
While a firewall applies a rule-set to allow traffic to flow, the IPS applies a rule-set to deny and stop traffic. For this reason, it’s best to have all three; a firewall, an IDS, and an IPS make for a truly comprehensive security solution.
